We've been quiet for a good reason...

March 11, 2009 in Books

Hey Red Porch Readers,

I'd thought I'd let you know that we’re busy working on some exciting new developments behind the scenes, so we’ll be a little quiet on the blog for a bit while we divert our energies toward that. We’ll resume regular postings and challenges, along with some fun new directions in the very near future. But please do leave us comments with links to your layouts because the Rockin Red Porch Chicks will still be snooping around the gallery and leaving some love on your layouts.

Stay tuned!

Brand new weekly challenge

March 3, 2009 in Challenges

It's challenge time. Kelly here with a brand new challenge at The Red Porch. I'm sorry I didn't get to post this on Monday. My poor 2 year old son has been very ill, so it's been difficult to get any computer time these past couple of days.

I really enjoye viewing the galleries and seeing the many beautiful layouts that get posted there on a daily basis. There is one layout in particular that caught my eye. It's a layout done by Cheryl called Takin' a Break

Photobucket

For this week's challenge, I thought it would be tons of fun to lift this layout? Some of you new digi scrappers may not know what lift means. It just means that you'll follow the same layout format as Cheryl did, but add your own creative vision to it. So who's with me on this challenge? As usual, you don't need to use TRP products but they are always welcomed and encouraged. For everyone who participates will get a nifty prize. Trust me on this. I don't have a pic at the moment, but I will post one soon. I will also post my example soon when my brain isn't so foggy from being sleep deprived. This challenge will end on Sunday. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Happy Scrapping! All my best, Kelly

Monday's Color Challenge

February 22, 2009 in Announcements

Hey TRP Readers,

Hope you had a wonderful weekend.  Are ready to jump into this week's challenge? As I played with Aubrey's super cute "Sweet Shop" kit this past weekend, I truly enjoyed the "pop" of these colors. It inspired me to do fun, light hearted layouts.

101

The candy colors and sweet treats sparked a color challenge idea. Let's do a color challenge using her spunky candy colors. Here is the color palette to use:

Colorpalettechallenge2

I'd like your layouts to incorporate ALL of these fun colors. It may be tricky, but I have faith you can do it. You have until the end of the week to submit a link to your layout in the comment section. No TRP products are required to enter the challenge, but we always welcome them.

Since we're so close to the end of the month, we decided to be generous and award everyone and anyone who wants to participate in this challenge with this free kit:

Woohoo!!! So hurry and place your entries. I can't wait to see what you've created and to give out FREE KITS!

All my best, Kelly

It's a Sketchy Challenge

February 16, 2009 in Challenges

Happy Monday everyone! It's time for a new challenge!  Hope everyone is ready :-)
There are so many wonderful resources out there for digi scrappers.  One resource that I find very useful are page maps, or sketches.  They can really help when I am struggling with how to layout my page or to simply give me some inspiration.  One great place to find page maps is http://www.pagemaps.com.  That is where I found the page map for this weeks challenge.  It is from the January page maps and looks like this:
Jan0912x12c

Here is the direct link (it is the third one down)

You can use the sketch as a guide for your page, but you don't have to follow it exactly. Just use it as inspiration.  Here is an example of a page I did:

Sweetgirl-600

As always, you don't have to use TRP products to play. Just leave us a comment with the link to your page so we can leave you some love.  The rocking red porch chicks will choose their favorite at the end of the week and a great prize will be headed to the winner!  Have fun!! Can't wait to see what you come up with.

A Lovely Challenge

February 8, 2009 in Announcements

It's that time again! Are you ready for a new challenge from TRP that you're just going to love?

Speaking of love...you know what Saturday is, right? Valentine's Day!

Here's some V-Day trivia for you all:

15% of U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day.

73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27% are women.

About 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are exchanged each year. That's the largest seasonal card-sending occasion of the year, next to Christmas.

More than 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day.

But most of all, more than the flowers, cards, or candy, Valentine's Day is all about telling the people you love how much they mean to you.

So in the spirit of love, this challenge is all about showcasing someone or something you love. I want you to make a layout based on these words: 10 Things I Love About ______. You can fill in the blank with whatever you want- your sweetheart, your puppy, coffee, scrapbooking, ANYTHING! I can't wait to see what you love!

I did my layout about my super sweet boyfriend. For this layout I used Leah Riordan's Freebie Paper Pack (the black background) and the amazing kit Happy Garden by Sarah Poulton, which can be found in TRP's store.

As always, you don't have to use TRP products to play. Our comment section is not working at the moment, so we'd like you to tag your layout in the gallery with FEBLOVE. If you don't have an account in the gallery, please email Kelly at kelly@theredporch.com with a link to your layout. You'll have a week to upload your layout. The Rocking Red Porch chicks will choose their favorite at the end of the week and a great prize will the winner will receive this fantastic new kit by Jessica:

HAVE FUN!!

Time for some Hybrid Fun!

February 1, 2009 in Challenges

What I love most about doing hybrid is that it motivates me to print out my projects so I can hold them in my hands! My regular LOs have to wait quite a while before they make it into print!

Here's my mini-album that I completed in less than a day!

462463729_8E7MQ-S

2-S

3-S

Don't worry, your challenge isn't to complete an entire album, but something fun and easy.

Since some people may be intimidated by hybrid, I'm going to make this week's challenge a small babystep to show you how much fun it is! The challenge is this: Print out an element (any element) and cut it out. I used matte photo paper for mine, but you can use regular photo paper or even card stock.

Cut it out, and glue it on a LO or project. To give it added dimension, I curled the edges of mine upward slightly, and I used a pop-up glue dot so it's not too flat on the page. You can also use foam adhesives for this effect. Of course, if you want to cut out several elements, you are welcome to do so.

Simple enough, right? So get out that scissors and start cutting!

4-S

And just for fun, here are some tips to help you complete your mini-album quickly (instead of it languishing with your ever-growing list of unfinished projects):

* Limit the number of kits used. For mine, I used Autumn Time by Jessica McComas, since it fit perfectly with my Thanksgiving theme. I pulled a few extra elements that coordinated with it, but kept it at a minimum.

* Plan out the number of pages you want, then figure out how many basic page templates you will need. I had 15 pages in mine, plus the cover, so I made 4 basic LOs. Then for the rest of the pages, I just mixed up the order of the templates, and switched out a few of the elements for a bit of variety. But not too much! You want the focus to be on the photos, and you want to get the album done!

* Consider using the same photo treatment to keep your photos unified. I used a B&W action on mine, but you can use any action that will give the photos a similar effect.

* And last of all, have fun, and get it done!

I'm looking forward to seeing all your entries for the challenge!

Ready for another challenge?

January 25, 2009 in Challenges

Kung Hee Fat Choy TRP readers! Today is Chinese New Year!

In recognition of the Chinese New Year, let's do a color challenge! In celebrating the Chinese new year, it's custom to wear red or adorn your house in red scrolls/paintings to scare the evil spirits away in the new year. With that in mind, I want to see LOs with lots and lots of red. It can be a layout about your new favorite pair of shoes, your daughter's brand new red bike, the spaghetti faced 14 month old son, or the red corvette you just got for Christmas.

Post your link in the comments so the Rockin' Red Porch Chicks can check it out and choose the winner. The winner will be announced at the end of the week. No TRP products are required for this challenge. The only other colors you can use in your layout will be either gold, silver, white, creme, or black. But RED needs to be the predominate color. Hope you have fun! Wishing you good fortune and many blessing in the year of the ox. All my best, Kelly

Drum roll please....and the answer to the game question is....

January 22, 2009 in Announcements

THOMAS JEFFERSON!!!

Who would've thought. He collected items and pictures, pasted them into his notebooks, and journaled about them. How amazing. I bet there are a lot more men out there who scrapbook. They probably don't call it scrapbook. What do you think they call it?  A personal log? A record book?

Congrats to Aimee, Renee, and Laura B. Make sure to send an email to kelly@theredporch.com to claim your prize. Woohoo!!! As for the other game participants, don't despair. I've got some goodies to give you too. Just hang tight!

Hope you had fun playing our game. Check back tomorrow to view the winner of this week's challenge.

All my best, Kelly

The end is near...

January 21, 2009 in Games

The game ends tomorrow evening, so hurry and post your answers...

Are you ready to play a game?

January 20, 2009 in Games

Hey TRP Readers, Here is the fabulous quickpage you'll get if you win the challenge. The fun new kit Kitschy Flowers & Ephemera by designer Stacy Dinkel was used to make this prize.  Don't forget to post your LO in the earlier comment to win some RAKS. You might get a free kit...

TRPquickpagefreebie

So, let's move on to the game. Whoever posts the correct answer will get a prize. This may be tricky, but with a little internet research, I think it'll be easy to answer this. In light of inauguration day in the United States, I thought I'd ask a presidential question. What former President of the United States .... was considered a scrapbooker? Back in the day, they may not have called him that, but in evaluating the way he kept his records, it would be easy to conclude that he was an avid scrapbooker.

If you don't know, take a guess. You might just get the right answer on chance. Also, all commenters are eligible for RAKs, so post your comments!

New Challenge - personal historical events

January 18, 2009 in Challenges

Hey TRP Readers,

After a much needed break after working ourselves silly with the grand-opening, we're back and ready to settle into a more sane pace, and to kick off this week, we have a new challenge.

Here in the US, it's our presidential inauguration which got us thinking about historic events. So this week's challenge is historic events, and we'd love to see a layout about a historic event in your life. It can be the birth of your child or the acceptance of your doctoral degree or what this inauguration means to you. Whatever suits you - let's see those personal historic layouts!

There are no requirements in terms of how many pictures or journaling are included in the layout and you don't have to use TRP products. Just post a link to your layout in the comments. The Rockin' Red Porch Chicks will pick the winner at the end of the week.

Oh, and RAKs will be given out to a couple lucky comment posters to this blog entry.

Happy Scrapping!

Kelly

Meet Stacy, the creative artist behind Kitschy Flowers

December 18, 2008 in Announcements

Stacyincolor What kind of artist are you?

My daily doodles include being an at-home Mama, part-time social worker, and a woman with a lot of pent-up creativity. I have a Bachelor in Fine Arts, as well as a Master’s degree in Counseling.  Both degrees have helped me hone my skills as an artist, especially in realizing that I need to be artful to keep my spirit alive. I've enjoyed many tangents in the artsy-crafty realm including interior decorating, sewing, repurposing furniture and clothing, painting, & photography. Quite simply, I've never met an art or craft I don't like.  But, I currently favor textile arts.  I also make and sell children's products in an online shop at Etsy.

How long have you been an artists/designer?
I watched my mother dabble in arts and crafts as I grew up, however, I'd say I fully jumped into the creative process as I was pursuing my undergraduate degree of Art Therapy.  As part of the curriculum, I had to take a class in each medium offered at Kansas State University.  I favored some mediums and hated others, but I learned the freedom to "play" no matter what materials were before me.

Where do you find your inspiration for your designs?
Namely, from my kids. Their fresh views, and especially the words of my four year old...are quite inspirational.  I also enjoy the blogging world and take inspiration from what I read and see there.

What is your favorite thing to design and why?
My style tends to be whimsical and colorful.  I think this lends itself well to children's products and children's themed artwork.  I'm also a mother to a 4.5 year old and an 8.5 month old.  Any unique day finds me immersed in their world, so it's no coincidence that the "kid stuff" comes naturally to me...

Do you have any designers that you admire?
I'm a fan of blogs, and have quite a list of those I find inspirational.

New Kit - Kitschy Flowers and Ephemera by Stacy Dinkel

December 17, 2008 in Announcements

Hi gang - we slipped another new kit in the store, this one by a new designer (Stacy Dinkel) who brings a slightly different twist to our growing handmade digital art collection.
Kitschy Flowers and Ephemera

And Kelleanne shows us what's possible with this fun kit.

We hope you like it!

Are you ready for this week's challenge?

December 14, 2008 in Challenges

Ok scrappers, it’s time for another photography challenge! In this challenge we are going to look at how we crop our photos. Instead of cropping your pictures in a rectangular or square shape, we want to challenge you to crop your photo(s) in different shapes. For example, you could use a circle, an oval, or even a star shape. Here is a layout I did as an example:

692_1f7f1107_m

The sky’s the limit on how many different ways you can crop and display your pictures. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! As always, you don’t have to use TRP products to play. Just leave us a link to your layout in the comment section within the next week. The winner will by the Rockin' Red Porch Chicks and receive this fantastic TRP quickpage:
